Author Guidelines

Please note that Emergence: A Journal of Undergraduate Literary Criticism and Creative Research only accepts submissions from students currently participating in the Arnhold Undergraduate Research Fellows Program in the English Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

 

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. If you have questions about the submission process for this journal, please contact the Arnhold Graduate Fellow.  Please note that this journal only publishes the work of students who are currently participating in the Arnhold Undergraduate Research Fellows Program in the English Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
  2. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  3. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  4. The document text:

    • is single-spaced;
    • uses 12-point, Times New Roman font for all main text (and 10-point font for footnotes);
    • employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses);
    • has one-inch margins;
    • Does not contain page numbers or page breaks (these will be added later by the editor)
    • Uses straight rather than smart (curvy) quotation marks
    • Uses footnotes rather than end-notes
    • All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
 

Copyright Notice

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:


1. Authors assert that they are entitled to grant Emergence: A Journal of Undergraduate Literary Criticism and Creative Research the right to publish the work, and authors agree a) that they ensure that the work does not violate any copyright; b) that if the work has previously appeared elsewhere online or in print the author has secured permission for re-publication; c) that the author has the responsibility for securing the reproduction rights and paying any necessary reproduction fees for quotations or reproductions of textual, visual, or other media content in the article that exceeds fair use provisions.


2. Emergence; A Journal of Undergraduate Literary Criticism and Creative Research does not pay renumeration or royalties for the works it publishes.  Nor does the journal take responsibility for the content or any opinions expressed within the articles; this responsibility is solely that of the authors.


3. While Emergence: A Journal of Undergraduate Literary Criticism and Creative Research retains non-exclusive, online publication rights for each article, all other rights--including copyright to the work--remain the author's as the sole owner of the work.  Authors do not need to obtain written permission to republish their work elsewhere in the future, but authors are asked to acknowledge Emergence: A Journal of Undergraduate Literary Criticism and Creative Research if it is the first publsiher of the work.
